ISLAMABAD – The Senate committee on power was Tuesday informed that 6000 posts of linesmen were laying vacant in Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO).
The Senate committee, which met with Senator Fida Mohammad in the chair, was informed that out of the total allocations of Rs 74.49 billion in the PSDP 2020-21, Rs 35.35 billion have been utilised.
Replying to the queries raised by the members of the committee, it was informed that the interest rate on the loan is 12 percent.
Senator Nauman Wazir said that the recent power break down in the country is being attributed to human fault. He said that this issue needs further study as few years ago software worth million of rupees was procured. Additional Secretary Power Division informed that currently two inquiries of the power breakdown are underway, and the committee will be apprised of the findings once they compile their reports.
The committee emphasized that instead of importing products from abroad, priority should be given to the local companies for the manufacturing power transformers, poles and other equipments. The committee also directed to provide a comparison of locally manufacturing products with the imported ones.
The committee members also objected to the English version of working papers saying that besides English the working papers should also be written in Urdu. Instead of feeling proud over the English language we should be proud of our national language, they added.
Regarding corruption in IESCO, the committee was informed that a fraud of Rs 239 million was committed from 2017-19. Out of the embezzled amount, Rs 194 million have been recovered so far and the officials involved in the corruption have been terminated. Chairman of the committee said that for two years corruption was going on in IESCO and the audit and finance braches were oblivious of it. The committee further directed that besides IESCO, all the Gencos and Discos should provide the record of the past 10 years to the forum.
The chairman noted that ironically in one sector of the federal capital 160 fake meters were installed, the officials involved were arrested and then suspended but later they were reinstated.
Chief Executive Officer PEPCO informed that 6000 vacancies of linesman are laying vacant in PEPCO. Chairman Committee replied, “If you would have performed well then the people would have not gone to the courts and the process would have been completed by now. You have hired 72 SDOs but the people who have applied for low grade are being humiliated. For the test Rs 47 million fees has been collected from the poor children.”
