ISLAMABAD – The Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) rounded up over a dozen culprits, informed sources on Friday.
The robbers are involved in targeting the citizens outside bank ATMs mostly in limits of Police Station (PS) Ramna, Shams Colony, Golra, Koral and Khanna, they said. They added a gang of armed robbers intercepted a citizen outside Meezen Bank ATM in G-13/3 on July 30, 2021 on gunpoint and snatched Rs 20,000 from him that he had just withdrawn from ATM. After committing crime, the robbers managed to escape from the scene, they said.
Similarly, a gunman also snatched Rs 12,000 from a citizen outside ATM of a bank in limits of PS Kohsar, sources mentioned. The residents of G-13/3 and suburbs, during an interaction with The Nation, alleged the gangs of robbers are on the loose in their areas and snatch cash, mobile phones, motorcycles and other valuables on gunpoint.
The residents demanded Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Qazi Jamil Ur Rehman and SSP Operations Dr Syed Mustafa Tanveer to launch a crackdown against the criminal roaming in streets and looting people round the clock.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) CIA Hakam Khan, however, when contacted, dispelled the impression that the gangs of robbers are active in capital and involved in depriving citizens of money outside ATMs. He said CIA along with Islamabad police, following the orders of SSP Operations Dr Syed Mustafa Tanweer, launched a massive crackdown and arrested some 18 robbers involved in looting citizens outside ATMs. The crackdown was launched in limits of police stations Koral, Khanna, Industrial Zone, Sabzi Mandi, Sihala and Tarnol. The arrested robbers have been identified as Yasin alias Tariq, Meena Baz aka Meeno, Chaman Khan, Muhammad Sharif alias Sheena, Rehmat Shah, Umer Zaman, Salah Uddin, Liaquat Shah, Iftikhar Shah, Fiaz Shah, Riasat Shah and Amjad Shah, he said adding that all the criminals are languishing in Adiala Jail. “Umer Zaman is the notorious criminal who was operating in limits of police stations Koral, Industrial Area, Sihala, Sabzi Mandi and Tarnol. We held him and registered seven cases against him,” said CIA DSP Hakam Khan.
He said the most interesting factor of these cases was that all the robbers had come from Mansehra, Kohat, Gujranwala and Azad Kashmir to commit crime except the two robbers namely Iftikhar Shah and Fiaz Shah, who belonged to Islamabad. He said the worst hit areas were of Koral and Khanna where these criminals were active. He said the CIA, under the surveillance of SSP Operations Dr Syed Mustafa Tanweer, is out on a mission to curb the street crime from Islamabad.
Superintendent of Police (SP) City Zone Muhammad Umer Khan, when contacted, said Kohsar police had managed to arrest the robber involved in snatching Rs 12,000 cash from a citizen outside bank ATM.
