JKT Group slams govt for registration of FIR against Chohan

LAHORE – Legislators from Jahangir Khan Tareen (JKT) Group criticised their own government in Punjab Assembly on Wednesday for registration of an FIR against Nazir Chohan by Advisor to Prime Minister on Accountability Shahzad Akbar.

JKT Group Parliamentary leader  Saeed Akbar Niwani warned that the government could lose majority if the likeminded MPAs withdrew support.  The session started more than two hours behind the scheduled time with Panel of Chairman Mian Shafi in the chair.

Answers related to the Local Government were given during the question-hour. PML-N’s Pir Ashraf Rasool raised the issue of registration of FIR against PTI’s Nazir Chohan.

“Nazir Chohan raised a valid question when he said that he had doubts over the belief of Shahzad Akbar regarding Khatam-e-Nabuwat (PBUH).

Instead of seeking clarification from Shahzad Akbar, FIR has been registered against PTI lawmaker,” he said amid slogans from the opposition benches in favour of Khatam-e-Nabuwat (PBUH).  Nazir Chohan again questioned the belief of Shahzad Akbar.

Chair asks Law Minister to sort out FIR issue

“I came to know that Shahzad Akbar is a Qadyani. My voters asked me to raise the question that why such important portfolios are given to Non-Muslims,” he said, adding, he raised the issue on a TV programme and after 10 days FIR was registered.

The FIR was launched despite the fact that Chief Minister was against such move, he claimed. He questioned that why an FIR was launched against an elected representative on the direction of a non-elected member. He said that he went to his ancestral area in Gujjar Khan and his doubts were strengthened regarding belief of Shahzad Akbar.

Chohan suggested the chair to constitute a committee of the House to ascertain faith of Shahzad Akbar regarding Khatam-e-Nabuwat (PBUH).

Infuriated Law Minister Raja Basharat said that no one had right to question the faith and belief of anyone as it was against the Islamic injunctions. “I know the family of Shahzad Akbar for last 40 years. They regularly visit shrines and mosques,” he said, adding, the House doesn’t have any mandate to question faith of anyone. He went on to say that MPA had raised doubts on the Prime Minister as well who made Shahzad Akbar his advisor. “If you have doubts on the Prime Minister too then you don’t have any moral right to sit in this House,” he said while challenging Chohan to bring two witnesses from Gujjar Khan.

Provoked Saeed Akbar Niwani also criticised the government over the issue. “Don’t dare us to leave this House. It will collapse if we leave. It is our right to criticize the policies of the government and we’ll keep using this right”, he said.

He questioned the need to launch FIR against Chohan while terming it an unwise decision. No MPA can be de-seated if he criticizes policies of the government, he said. The chair asked the law minister to sort out the issue of FIR against Chohan.

The session was later adjourned till Friday morning (tomorrow).
